What to Look for in the best Calisthenics Program?
First and foremost, our list of best Calisthenics Programs will only contain workout routines which work. We’ll review their set of exercises from a Calisthenics and a physiotherapeutically point of view first and foremost. I specifically am a trained and licensed physiotherapist. If it doesn’t work, it won’t even be featured. That’s important, the exercises need to be effective, efficient, and safe. How those Calisthenics exercises are brought to you is a matter up for debate. This is how we formulate our list of best Calisthenics Programs, which ultimately make it and which we drop despite having theoretically correct exercises. More precisely, we look for the following:
Coaching
Very importantly, you need to be coached and instructed on what to do and how to do it. Preferably this happens through video material which depicts a professional showcasing each exercise. Without coaching, you’re left in the dark and a mistake once learnt takes twice the effort to correct. Many of the best Calisthenics Programs will feature full-length videos or even train-along footage where the professional will do the same exercise you are doing until you’re done.
Progression
You’d like to know where you stand as a Calisthenics practitioner. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an expert, some kind of metric by which you can measure your progress makes all the difference. Our brains are wired to seek out solutions towards progress. We are evolved to gain much satisfaction out of seeing progress. Without progress, you are biologically incapable of continuing. This is why we like to see a progression system in our best Calisthenics Programs which looks at where you started and shows you how you’ve grown. The best Calisthenics apps also include a progressively more difficult workout routine to this.
Learning & Knowledge
Jordan Peterson said once that if you are not willing to be a fool, you can’t become a master. He also said that if you know why you suffer, it becomes many times more bearable. That is why you must learn about Calisthenics and understand what it is that you are doing. If you know what causes your soreness, you can avoid making the same mistake in the future. Or at least you’ll know what is causing you to feel sore and when it will be gone.
Inspiration
Finally, inspiration is vital. Calisthenics is as much a mental task as it is a physical one. The best Calisthenics Programs should be inspirational and inspire you to take up your Calisthenics routine time and time again. If it makes you feel like it’s an absolute slog, just another chore in the way of your daily routine, your mood will go down. You might think you can just persevere through it and that stoically taking everything that comes at you is the right thing to do. You’d be right but know also that at the heart of perseverance lies loyalty. It is hard to remain loyal to something you don’t stand behind.
Why Following a Calisthenics Program Gives Better Results
Why following a Calisthenics Program gives you better results than going solo is an interesting question. We want to preface what we have to say about this with: we don’t know.
Sorry, but really, we don’t exactly know why following a Calisthenics Program is just plain better. By its very definition, following a program means that it isn’t fully custom tailored to your body and goals. In a perfect situation, you would decide on your workouts with such precision that it gives you the most optimal results. That would mean no workout routine would look the same and it would differ person to person. A preset Calisthenics Program will always be a shade of a one size fits all solution. The best Calisthenics Programs sort of get around this by tweaking existing routines to better meet your needs. They’ll also perform an assessment of your current capabilities to better tailor your routine to you.
By every metric though, adhering to a preset Calisthenics Program gives you better results. Why is that? We can hazard a guess.
Are you really that confident about your knowledgeability? A perfectly unique workout routine also assumes a perfectly rational actor who knows everything they need to know. Do you know everything about your own body, nutrition, muscle hypertrophy? Do you know what Calisthenics is on a scientific level? How different exercises work and what are their effects on your body? What are the appropriate resting and recuperation periods for your muscles and regeneration rate? Most likely not even your physiotherapist would know exactly without extensive research and testing.
At some point, a slightly tweaked Calisthenics Program is simply good enough to give you results. In almost all cases it is better than you simply guessing what is best.
Secondly, it gives you structure. Calisthenics is 50% mental exercise. Having that structure, one you can focus on, grab and hold on too, is so important. In the military they say: a bad order followed well is better than a good order not followed at all. We’ll make sure the orders you receive are good orders, the rest is up to you.

#3 Berg Movement by Sondre Berg
7-Day Free Trial Included
- Operating Systems: iOS and Android
- Starting Level: beginner
- Price: starting at $19.99/mo
- Required Equipment: None
Overview
Sondre Berg is the chubby and insecure teenager who became a Nordic god in the flesh. He scored high marks during our review of Berg Movement app. After discovering Calisthenics for himself and changing his life, he decided to make it available to the public. With the Berg Movement, you’ll be following the same routines Sondre Berg does. But it goes beyond that.
The Berg Movement app is a sleek and easy to use Calisthenics App which deceives with appearances. The clean outside hides a fully adjustable coach which is all you can expect from a personal trainer except being of flesh and blood.
You are coached by Sondre Berg himself, who made all the exercise videos on the app. The videos and descriptions are very clear and easy to follow along. The videos run seamlessly until you’re done with the exercise. Should you become unsure that you’re still doing the right thing, you can just give the screen a peek and pick up where you left.
Berg Movement consists of training modules of varying levels of difficulty. The app uses progression tests to periodically see where you stand, especially in the beginning. It will then automatically suggest new modules or modules of upgraded difficulty to keep you on the right track. You can freely tweak these modules, swapping them out for easier or harder ones. You can also add entirely new ones to train a different skill. This creates a theoretically infinite number of workout routines.
The motivation to keep going comes from Sondre Berg himself. It can’t be described in words; you’ll have to see his demos for yourself. He is a jovial person and the expression on his face just shows he enjoys what he’s doing. Just what a Calisthenics Program needs.
Pros of Berg Movement
- Beginner friendly
- Lighthearted
- Crisp HD videos
- Customizable
Cons of Berg Movement
- None, but inches in behind Cali Move Complete Calisthenics for completeness and progression.

- Cali Move Body Transformation Review
Overview
The second entry by Cali Move on our list of best Calisthenics Programs is their Body Transformation program. Where the Complete Calisthenics Program lays the groundwork, the Cali Move Body Transformation program is meant to see you soar to new heights. The core objective is easy: to become the best version of yourself in as short a timeframe as possible. Which is contrasted by the length the program takes in its totality: 104 weeks. This is longer than the more accessible Complete Calisthenics Program and is the reason for us to place it just below our number 2.
The Cali Move Body Transformation program looks, feels and functions much the same as the Complete Calisthenics program. With crisp and clear instructional videos and exercise lists, you can simply follow along day-by-day, week-by-week. You are less coddled and held by the hand, however, than in Complete Calisthenics. The entry requirements are also higher, so you’re expected to know what you’re doing already. This program is meant for those who don’t want to be lectured, just be given their exercises to do that day and get on with it. You shouldn’t mind having to grind it out either and do so long term.
The results, though, can be quite spectacular, with an emphasis on building muscle, strength and skill. The first phase is the hardest, after that the Body Transformation program is sooner a grindfest, a continuous upwards line where your body keeps getting stronger and stronger. Like with all hypertrophic programs, pain is weakness leaving the body and you need a Pitbull mentality for the long run.
Pros of Cali Move Body Transformation
- Builds strength quickly
- Chiseled physique
- Crisp HD videos
Cons of Cali Move Body Transformation
- Less beginner friendly

- The Movement Athlete Review
Overview
The Movement Athlete is an immensely popular Calisthenics App, and that is literally an understatement. Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people use the Calisthenics Program of The Movement Athlete for their daily workout routine.
The app is very easy to use and has a sleek design. All the information you need is readily available and easy to find. You are instructed via very in-dept video’s which show you exactly how to perform each exercise. Should you not want that, you can skip this step just as easily and just get on with your workout. The Movement Athlete is one of the only apps which strikes the perfect balance between being your coach while not coddling you all the time.
You’ll first do assessment training, during which The Movement Athlete will determine your current level. It will then ask you for your goals and based on all this information it will custom fit a workout routine for you. You can tweak this routine to your liking at any time. From time to time, you’ll do reassessments, and the program will show you exactly how you progressed. It will then also recommend new exercises or harder variations of exercises accordingly.
All the information for you to learn further is present within the app. Most pages are set up as two-tiered. The first page is an overview with basic information, should you wish to learn more there is a button there to proceed. This will lead to more detailed information, and this is a common theme throughout The Movement Athlete. It keeps the app easy to use while still retaining a wealth of information.
The Movement Athlete talks to you on a personal level, takes your body type and current level into consideration and does it best to make your workout routine feasible for you to achieve. This is a great, inspirational way of getting people to keep hitting those goals and pushing further to attain new heights.
Pros of The Movement Athlete
- One of the best and complete Calisthenics programs
- Tied with Cali Move for best for beginners
- Beginner to expert Calisthenics

#6 Onnit 6 Bodyweight Workout

- Price: from $49.95 one-time
- Required Equipment: None
Overview
With the Onnit 6 Bodyweight Workouts you’ll experience 6-week complete body transformations. Onnit 6 combines many bodyweight exercises from Calisthenics with CrossFit, Mobility and plyometrics to come to effective workout regimes. As timed workouts with a set start and finish with the promise of a full transformation of body and soul, Onnit 6 goes in hard. You can self-regulate the intensity of the exercises, but you are meant to push through your boundaries and ceilings wherever those may be.
Another big attraction to Onnit 6 is that you require no equipment whatsoever. Only a set of comfortable pants and a T-shirt are enough to finish the whole 6-week workout. The workout itself is presented in easy to follow along videos with clear instructions and excellent production quality. You can download the whole Onnit 6 workout to any device, so you don’t need an internet connection during the exercise. All exercises are made to be done anywhere where you have flat space. That could mean from the comfort of your own home, a breezy beach or a sunny lawn.
You get not 1 but 6 workouts, each lasting 6 weeks for a total of 36 weeks’ worth of total overhaul workouts. Each 6-week workout is geared toward achieving specific goals, like strength gain, muscle toning, cardio and weight loss. Each workout can be performed and achieved by anyone regardless of their level of proficiency. A more seasoned Calisthenics athlete simply increases the intensity of each exercise. This has its limits, of course, and already ripped athletes will find less worth in Onnit 6 than beginners.
Pros of Onnit 6 Bodyweight Workout
- Fast results
- Directed results
- Great UI and crisp HD video
Cons of Onnit 6 Bodyweight Workout
- Once you’ve done the routines once or twice, they quickly lose their worth
#7 BarBrothers the System
- Operating Systems: website
- Starting Level: intermediate
- Price: £48.68 one time
- Required Equipment: Pull-Up Bar
- BarBrothers The System Review
Overview
If you think you got it in you to become strong and absolutely ripped, the 12-week Calisthenics Program called the “System” is your calling. Developed by the BarBrothers, this Calisthenics Program is all about Pull-Ups and its many variations. The aim is to build muscle quickly and healthily, leaving you with the physique of a Greek statue.
The program consists of 17 different fields and programs, from an introduction to starting your first exercises and working your way up to excellence. There are also areas about nutrition and how to optimize your bodily functions for the quite grueling training ahead of you.
For each week you can refer to a central workout PDF which details the entire course and each exercise you need to do. For every week there are video’s which showcase the individual exercises you will be doing.
The BarBrothers are known for their aggressive marketing techniques, approaching people via e-mail with promotions and offering affiliates a hefty commission (they offered us the same). We’re not primarily interested in your money as much as our dedication to seeing Calisthenics widespread. We’re mentioning BarBrothers here because the System does really work to get you that look so many men desire. The founders of BarBrothers, Lazar Novocic and Dusan Djolevic are immensely popular and are backed by many, many athletes globally. They refer to themselves as a brotherhood.
Pros of BarBrothers the System
- Effective 12-week course to go from normal to ripped
- Very fast progression!
Cons of BarBrothers the System
- Not for the beginner, especially not if you’re obese or otherwise impaired still
- Expect aggressive and incessant e-mail marketing
#8 Body by Rings by Fitness FAQs
- Operating Systems: website
- Starting Level: intermediate
- Price: $95.00 one time
- Required Equipment: Gymnastic Rings
- Body by Rings Review
Overview
The Body by Rings Calisthenics program makes full use of the versatile Gymnastic Rings. The 18-week course sees your body transformed and will have you attain many new skills you thought would be impossible for you before. Gymnastic Rings add a level of difficulty to your Calisthenics on top of doing regular old Pull-Ups and Dips. FitnessFAQs make excellent use of them to have you do Calisthenics.
It isn’t for the absolute beginner, and you’ll have to be able to do 5 Pull-Ups, 5 Dips and 10 Push-Ups by yourself before you start. You’ll also need a set of Gymnastic Rings if that isn’t obvious already. Once you have these, you are ready for a bodily transformation.
You’ll begin rather easily and work your way up to ever more challenging feats. The program is easy to learn and has masses of video tutorials explaining and showing what they need you to do. You’re given some leeway in how many repetitions you perform, seeing as the Gymnastic Rings are in quite a league of their own.
The first week is the worst. Small muscles you ordinarily don’t use are suddenly activated to keep the rings straight above or beneath you. After that you can expect some serious results, soon.
Pros of Body by Rings by Fitness FAQs
- Uses Gymnastic Rings, so an added layer of difficulty and faster progression
Cons of Body by Rings by Fitness FAQs
- Needs Gymnastic Rings, so not beginner friendly
Alternatives for a Calisthenics Program
The first and most expensive alternative to even the best Calisthenics Program would be to get a personal coach. A personal Calisthenics Coach is an expert who can take your baseline fitness and your desired outcomes and mold this into a personalized, optimized workout schedule. They would encourage and motivate you and at the same time temper your expectations where needed, all to achieve the best results possible for you. Other alternatives for a Calisthenics Program which are more like it are:
- A Mobility Program: focusses more on flexibility under stress, increasing joint strength, muscle strength and agility.
- A Calisthenics App: a Calisthenics Program tailored to a mobile app so that you can take your Calisthenics anywhere.
Conclusions About Calisthenics Programs
We’ve presented you with an assortment of the best Calisthenics Programs. Following a Calisthenics Program has empirically proven benefits. They give you a workable, actionable plan to implement which is often just the push you need. A Calisthenics Program also fills in the gaps in your own knowledge about what exercises and what routines garner results. Lastly, working with a Calisthenics Program gives you something to look forward to too, goals to set and achieve. That in and off itself is a huge morale booster to most. That’s very important because the body will not go where the mind isn’t already.
Is there an all-time best Calisthenics Program? Most likely not. Pick one, anyone you like and stick to it. If you like a diversity of techniques, a more comprehensive Calisthenics Program is the right option. If you’re just looking to build upper-body strength and keep it simple and light, an easier program will suffice. The Cali Move Complete Calisthenics Program is ranked number 1 for a reason, though. In our experience more than 90% of people find the Cali Move Complete Calisthenics Program the best Calisthenics Program for their needs. It is an ideal starting position.
But far more important than any one choice, STICK TO IT!
Frequently Asked Questions About Calisthenics Programs
Here are a few frequently asked questions we get about Calisthenics Programs and Calisthenics exercise in general.
The sky is the limit where it comes to Calisthenics. As a movement and bodyweight-oriented school of sports, Calisthenics can strengthen and shape all parts of your body. Some use Calisthenics just to get and stay in shape. Others build their body to a statuesque physique. It’s all possible with Calisthenics.
The staple and best Calisthenics exercises are the Pull-Up, the Push-Up, the Dip and the Squat. These core exercises stand at the heart of all Calisthenics exercise. Once you’ve mastered these you can continue on to acquire new skills, which will almost always mean variations of these basic Calisthenics exercises. Calisthenics programs consist mainly of these or variations of these exercises.
Although there are plenty of bad programs, there is probably no single best Calisthenics Program. We advise anyone looking for a routine to look at our list of the best Calisthenics Programs and pick the one they like. The single most important thing to remember about following a Calisthenics Program is to stick to it. Consistency is key. A solid starting position is the Cali Move Complete Calisthenics Program as it has a little of everything and does all things well.
For beginners we recommend a Calisthenics Program which assumes no prerequisites like being able to do a number of repetitions of a certain exercise. If these prerequisites are given, you must make sure that you can actually meet these benchmarks. Most of the courses on our list of best Calisthenics Programs are beginner friendly.
Assuming a staggered routine where you don’t do all your Calisthenics on the same day, you should do no more than 3 exercises per muscle group. You should always stop if you can’t go on or if your muscles feel limp. There is no point going on beyond this as it will only introduce acute hypertrophy, ultimately leaving you weaker instead of stronger.
This depends greatly on your routine. If you do all your Calisthenics exercises in one workout, you should leave 2 days of rest in between workouts at least. If you use a staggered routine, you can exercise certain muscle groups one day and others the next day. This will allow you to exercise every day and not lose discipline. Usually even in staggered routines there will be one day of complete rest and one day of stretching.
Depending on your goals, you should do Calisthenics at least twice a week. Even if you’re just looking to get in shape or stay in shape, maintaining discipline is important. By doing Calisthenics regularly and at set times you can keep up your routine. If you want more from your body, you will have to increase the frequency and length of each workout session. You can follow a Calisthenics Program if you’re unsure about your own ability to create and maintain a viable routine.
Every day using a staggered routine. Muscle building takes a long time and a lot of effort. In all other sports, young men are the top athletes. In feats of strength, however, it’s usually the older guys in their late 30’s and early 40’s who come out on top. That is because of the sheer length of time it takes to build that amount of muscle. It will also take discipline and perseverance, following a 7-day a week Calisthenics Program which includes resting days and stretching days.
Thanks for the review! I’m looking into purchasing a program, but would much prefer full-length workout videos where I can just follow along the program (similar to BeachBody model). Do any of these have those? Thanks!
Hey Jim, Thanks voor the message! All the calisthenics program have single video’s of each exercise. They do not have a full-length workout video. But there is a good thing about the programs in this list. You can following along the workout from Cali Move Complete Calisthenics while you are working out. It’s very easy and if you don’t like it you can just ask for a refund. I suggest you try it and have a look yourself! Good luck and please let me know what you purchased!
I ended up trying The Movement Athlete. Was hard to say no to lifetime access for $200. So far it\’s definitely tested my body in different ways and looking forward to it!
Lifetime deals are always a good option! Can you please message us on this topic to share some results? Looking forward to it!
I’ve been doing calisthenics for about 12 months in a gym with a PT who’s done cali on and off for about 7 years. He’s from a boxing background, but loves cali. I’mat the stage now where I need a more structured programme to be able to learn more on my own. I can do pull-ups, dips, press-ups, static holds, leg raises with good form and I’m well experienced using rings too. I need to move to the next stage now and am impressed with Daniel from Fitnessfaqs as well as the School of Calisthenics.

Dear Tiago,
Thank you for your insightful comment. I’d like to provide several responses to your inquiry:
Creating a personal workout routine is a skill that many Personal Trainers, particularly those specializing in Calisthenics, have extensively studied. So, while it’s certainly possible for you to craft your own routine, understand that it may not be an easy task.
In our blog post titled “What is Calisthenics,” we delve into the key training principles and parameters you should be aware of before constructing your own training program. Here’s the link for your reference: https://calisthenicsworldwide.com/calisthenics/what-is-calisthenics/. I encourage you to visit the site and familiarize yourself with the basics.
Once you’ve completed the Cali Move program, I am confident that you will have gained significant self-knowledge, developed a stronger mindset, and, without a doubt, achieved your goals. Additionally, I don’t anticipate any regression. If you successfully adhere to the Cali Move Complete Calisthenics program, you’ll master many, if not all, of the crucial calisthenics exercises. This program spans nearly two years, and by the time you complete it, you will have become proficient in each exercise. Believe me when I say that calisthenics, movement, and general fitness are “skills for life.”
By the end of the course, you’ll be familiar with all exercises – their names, movements, and designs. This knowledge will equip you to eventually create a workout routine that best aligns with your needs.
I hope these responses are helpful. If you have any further queries, please don’t hesitate to let me know!
Best wishes for your health,
Jari (JD)
