CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar and Hangboard Review – Best Pull-Up Bar for Climbers?

Jelle Is Doing A Pull-Up On the CLEVO Doorframe Pull-Up Bar

The CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar combines a hangboard with a regular Door Pull-Up Bar, combining both regular Calisthenics exercise and training for rock climbing. Climbers don’t just need strong arms and shoulders, but very strong fingers as well. Your Grip Strength is an important factor as a climber, whether that it is scaling a rock face or ascending a mountain top. The CLEVO Door Pull-up Bar allows you to train your entire upper body and your fingers exactly for this cause. Time for me to review this hangboard and Pull-Up Bar combination.

The Assembly

The first assembly does take some time, but all the materials are present. All you need is a Philips screwdriver, a hex key, an Allen wrench and a wrench. I’ll guide you through the assembly step by step for both the Pull-Up Bar and the Hangboard. You’ll be done in no time.

Suitable Door Dimensions

Suitable door dimensions for the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar are a depth between 11 and 28 centimeters (4 1/3” and 11”) and a width between 68 and 94 centimeters (10 1/4” and 37”).

Another requirement is that the frame must be wide enough to accommodate the feet of the retention bracket. The top of your door frame must be at least 1 cm (0.39”) proud from the wall and less than 11cm (4.33″) high.

This product will not work with frames that are perfectly flush with the wall.

CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar and Hangboard Exercises

I’ve had great success exercising with the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar, especially when it comes to the standard Calisthenics repertoire of hanging and pulling exercises. Already very versatile, the hangboard adds a dimension that is crucial for climbers. You can also diversify further with addons like bands, rings and vests.

Pull-Up Bar Exercises

I can recommend the CLEVO Pull-Up for the following exercises and their variants (if those variants don’t require side-to-side movement or above-the-bar work:

You can make your own additions to the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar like Resistance Bands to aid in a lot of the abovementioned exercises. You can use them separately as well for banded exercise like bicep curls.

Optional: Adding Gymnastic Rings

Another great addition to the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar, because it is so sturdy, are Gymnastic Rings. With Gymnastic Rings you can also do above-the-bar exercises like Dips and Ring Muscle-Ups but also your Rows and triceps exercises like Triceps Extensions and Pelicans.

Weighted Calisthenics with the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar

Weighted Calisthenics are best done wearing a Weighted Vest. The rated maximum weight of 130kg or 286lb is enough for most Calisthenics practitioners. Simply add your body weight to the extra weight you’re adding on and make sure you stay under that.

CLEVO Hangboard Exercises

The most striking feature of the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar is the Hangboard. You can practice various dead hangs from the Hangboard and you have a lot of options for alcove widths and angles in which you can place all or only some of your fingers. This is great for your finger strength and increasing that important Grip Strength. You can also practice Pull-Ups and Leg Raises, which are also essential for climbing under constant muscle tension.

The Hangboard is precisely cut and finely polished. This mimics the suboptimal grip you’ll get during real climbing. Just like with real climbing, applying some Liquid Chalk really helps with that. Aside from the chalk, CLEVO also offers their finger tape to help prevent injury.

Stability & Quality

I had no problems doing all my exercises with the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar and the Hangboard. The whole assembly is of a high quality, with high-grade parts and materials. I liked the polished and sleek look and the contrast between the white beech wood and the black powder coating.

The measurements of any door frame won’t be very exact, so you’ll always experience a tiny bit of wiggle with a Door Frame Pull-Up Bar like this one. The CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar is one of the best fitting ones and the wiggle it does have is no indicator that it might come loose. Overall, it’s a very stable platform for your Calisthenics.

Other CLEVO Options

CLEVO has other products and options as well. You can substitute the standard Hangboard for other versions, with different kinds of grips and alcoves. Every Hangboard, including the standard one, can also be bought standalone and fastened to your wall directly. It would sit nicely right above a door header, for instance, without the whole Pull-Up Bar assembly.

CLEVO also has ceiling options which are fastened directly to the ceiling. These boards can be populated with a variety of grips for you to practice with.

Conclusions About the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar and Hangboard

The first assembly of your CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar and Hangboard is a little more work than some other Pull-Up Bars. What can I say? You’re buying German engineering, so you have to kind of live with it. The end-result though is very nice, as I expected from a subsidiary of Pullup & Dip. The high-quality materials and fit and finish speak for themselves and justify the higher price point. It’s clearly made to very strict tolerances and it is one of the best fitting Door Frame Pull-Up Bars I’ve ever used.

Using the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar gives you all the options you need for your standard Calisthenics. The beech wood bar feels nice to the touch and doesn’t need any extras like chalk or gloves. I had no problem doing my complete exercise routine. The Hangboard gives you plenty of options to train your grip and finger strength in preparation for the climbing board or even the rock face.

The CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar, combined with Gymnastic Rings and Resistance Bands would make for a very complete exercises package. But on its own, the CLEVO Door Pull-Up Bar is already a very versatile and reliable tool for your Calisthenics exercise.

I can certainly recommend this high-quality product for all your Calisthenics needs (as far as Pull-Up Bars go) and the addition of the Hangboard makes it perfect for beginner and advanced climbers, too.

Frequently Asked Questions about CLEVO and the Hangboard

A few more questions about CLEVO and their products.

How many times a week should I use a hangboard?

Using the hangboard two or three times a week will see a marked increase in finger strength and grip strength. Short sessions of 20 second hangs or 10 Pull-Ups are enough to see good results within a couple of weeks.

Which other CLEVO products are good for climbers?

CLEVO offers multiple products for climbers to practice with. Aside from their Door Pull-Up Bar and the standard hangboard, multiple hangboard versions are available. Permanently mounted equipment to either the wall or the ceiling can also be populated with a variety of grips and hold points for you to practice with.

Should rock climbers do Calisthenics?

Rock Climbers can benefit greatly from doing Calisthenics. The movements involved in Rock Climbing are very similar to those you learn in Calisthenics, while Calisthenics is also more efficient in building strength and endurance. Specialized training like climbing walls, gear instruction and a slow progression from easier ascents to harder ones are also required.
