🔑Key Takeaways
- To save space and money, get a Doorway Pull-Up Bar. The best options are the Gornation Telescopic Bar and the Pullup & Dip Telescopic Bar.
- To focus on Pull-Ups and maximize free space around your bar, consider a Ceiling-Mounted Pull-Up Bar. The best, most durable option is the Gornation Ceiling Pull-Up Bar.
- If you also want to do Muscle-Ups, a Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar is the best option. The best product in this category is the Pullup & Dip Muscle-Up Bar.
- If you want a high bar but you can’t drill into your walls or ceilings, a Free-Standing design suits your needs. The Gravity Fitness Pull-Up Rack is the best Free-Standing design that does all the basics right without breaking the bank.
What Type of Pull-Up for Home Use?
Several types of Pull-Up Bars lend themselves to home use. We divide our home Pull-Up Bars into the following categories, with some broad advantages:
- Door Pull-Up Bars: compact, budget-friendly, non-permanent
- Ceiling Pull-Up Bars: stable, high, good range of motion
- Wall Pull-Up Bars: stable, lots of head space, good range of motion
- Free-Standing Pull-Up Bars: high, non-permanent, good range of motion
Best Door Pull-Up Bars at Home
If you don’t have a lot of room for a permanent installation, a Door Pull-Up Bar is a great way to get a home Pull-Up Bar. They are compact, can be stored away when not in use, and they don’t break the bank. You only need a typical doorway, and that will be your exercise space.
There are three subcategories of Door Pull-Up Bars: Doorway Pull-Up Bars, Door Frame Pull-Up Bars, and Wall-Mounted Door Pull-Up Bars. They differ in how you attach them to your door. Your best option is a Doorway Pull-Up Bar.
Doorway Pull-Up Bars

This type of Door Pull-Up Bar is clamped in place between the door posts of the doorway. Previous generations of this type of Pull-Up Bar were unreliable; however, in our experience, both the Gornation Extend-It Door Pull-Up Bar and the Pullup & Dip Telescopic Door Pull-up Bar are stable and safe.
They both come with foam grips, which isn’t my favorite, but these feel good. The main selling point is that you can easily adjust the height at which you place them. This makes them suitable for regular Pull-Ups, Chin-Ups, and Levers, but you can also use them as a Static Bar at waist height for Rows and Muscle-Ups, and even as a straight Push-Up bar.
They sit sturdier than Door Frame Pull-Up Bars, but the main disadvantage of the Doorway Pull-Up Bar is that you’re limited to the width of your doorway. In most cases, this eliminates wide Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups. They also put a lot of pressure on your door frame to sit tight.
Door Frame Pull-Up Bars

A Door Frame Pull-Up Bar attaches over your door header and wedges securely in place. The door header acts as a pivot, and the more weight you put on the bar, the harder it clamps down on the door header. This makes the Door Frame Pull-Up Bar more secure when you’re hanging on it, in theory at least.
The best Door Frame Pull-Up Bar is the Gornation Hook-It Pull-Up Bar. It is the most compact Pull-up Bar of this type, and you can collapse the hooks until the bar is entirely flat. This makes storing the bar much easier than other Door Frame Pull-Up Bars, which tend to be very awkward contraptions to store away.
The Gornation Hook-It comes with two bars, both in a very nice black powder-coated steel. Powder-coated is my second-favorite grip type (after wood, of course), and for a Pull-Up Bar, it is an excellent material choice.
The top bar is wide enough for wide Pull-ups, making the Gornation Hook-It perfect for all standard Pull-Up and Chin-Up variations, going from narrow to wide. The lower bar is thicker than the top bar, making it suitable for False Grip exercises, such as Front and Back Levers, and Skin-the-Cat.
The downside of this type of home Pull-Up Bar is that you cannot hang it lower, unlike a Doorway Pull-Up Bar.
Wall-Mounted Door Pull-Up Bar

If you can and want to drill into your door header, then this final alternative home Pull-Up Bar provides the most stable and compact option. You permanently attach the Pullup & Dip Wall-Mounted Door Pull-Up Bar (what a mouthful) above your door. It features minimal wall offset for a Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar, requiring the doorway space for exercising.
The Pullup & Dip features a compact and minimalist design, but it comes with a wide bar. You can do all your basic Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups, including wide variations. Front and Back Levers are also doable, and the grip has a great diameter and texture for all these exercises. Depending on the height and width of the trim around the door frame, exercises like Skin the Cat might be a tighter squeeze.
Best Ceiling-Mounted Pull-Up Bars at Home

A Ceiling-Mounted Pull-Up Bar gives you the most free space underneath and around the bar. This gives you great freedom of movement for lever exercises. It is also the best choice for focusing on standard Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups. Most ceilings are high enough that you can keep your legs straight while exercising. The winner in this category is the Gornation Pull-Up Bar “Multi”.
The Gornation Pull-Up Bar “Multi” keeps it simple but gets all the things we want right. It has enough room above your head for a full Pull-Up without bumping into the ceiling. It’s also far enough from the floor that I can keep my legs completely straight. The powder-coated steel texture is also perfect for this kind of Pull-Up Bar. The Gornation Pull-Up Bar “Multi” is wide enough for all standard Pull-Up and Chin-Up variations. It can handle up to 200kg, so plenty of leeway for Weighted Calisthenics
If you’re looking for more variety and alternative exercise types from your home Pull-Up Bar, the CLEVO Ceiling Module is an option. You get a regular Pull-Up Bar with an excellent wooden grip, as well as various ways to practice climbing and improve your finger strength in general. You can attach many different Pull-Up and climbing additions to your CLEVO M Ceiling Module, customizing it as you want it.
The downside to these as a home Pull-Up Bar is that you can’t do any exercises above the bar.
Best Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bars at Home

With a Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar, you get the stability of a permanently fixed setup, but more room above the bar for exercises like Muscle-Ups and Straight Bar Dips. You can still perform a full range of motion Pull-up, provided you either place your Pull-Up Bar outside or have a high enough ceiling. The winner of our Best Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar Review was the Gravity Fitness.
Unfortunately, the Gravity Fitness Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar is no longer in production. Luckily, the runner-up is the Pullup & Dip Muscle-Up Bar, which is just as good, but only lost out due to its higher price point.
The Pullup & Dip Muscle-Up Bar has a wide top bar with a nice powder-coated steel finish. The wall offset is enough for all exercises, including levers. The neutral grip bars are equally pleasant to grip, and the build quality of this bar is excellent. With Gravity Fitness out of the running, the Pullup & Dip Muscle-Up Bar is the best Wall-Mounted home Pull-Up Bar.
Best Free-Standing Pull-Up Bars at Home

If you don’t want to be confined to a doorway and can’t or don’t want to drill into parts of your home, a Free-Standing Pull-Up Bar is your only option. Luckily, there are great Free-Standing designs that handle all your basic Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups very well. The best Free-Standing Pull-Up Bar for home use is the Gravity Fitness Pull-Up Rack, but there are some notable alternatives you might consider.
Gravity Fitness Pull-Up Rack: Most Budget-Friendly
The Gravity Fitness Pull-Up Rack is the most budget-friendly option for a home Pull-Up Bar, yet it offers all the expected versatility of a Free-Standing design and more. The grip is nice, and the bar (with the extension kit) is stable enough for all your Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups. You can also place the bar on its back to get access to a Static Bar and a Push-Up Bar.
Gornation Premium Pull-Up Station: Best for Street Lifting
The Gornation Premium Pull-Up Station is an excellent alternative if you are into Street Lifting. You get more options, such as a Push-Up Bar, without needing to tip the bar over, and there is also a Dip Bar extension. The Gornation also has a place to store your barbell and pins for the weight plates. The Gornation bar is of perfect build quality and is a very stable bar that can handle up to 250kg. Adding weight plates to the holding pins makes it even more stable.
Other Alternative Free-Standing Pull-Up Bars
Lastly, two noteworthy alternatives for home Pull-Up Bars are the FitnessKit Basic Strength Bar and the Bullbar Foldable Pull-Up Bar. The FitnessKit Basic Strength Bar is ideal for those who want an Outdoor Pull-Up Bar, such as in the backyard. All the FitnessKit modules are weather-resistant. The FitnessKit is also a modular system that allows you to add other bars, including a Static Bar and Dip Bars, and design your home Pull-Up Bar however you want.
The Bullbar Foldable Pull-Up Bar folds up like an accordion and is surprisingly compact for a full-height, Free-Standing design. You get a nice, wide top bar, and you also get to your dips.
The Gymnastic Rings Alternative
You can add Gymnastic Rings to your Pull-Up Bar, but I’d like to mention them as a straight-up alternative to a Pull-Up Bar. You can do any exercise with Gymnastic Rings that you also do on a Pull-Up Bar. The rings unlock many other exercises that Pull-Up Bars can’t do as easily, such as side exercises like Bicep Curls. Adjusting the length of the straps on a set of rings is almost always easier and quicker than adjusting the height of a Pull-Up Bar (if it even allows for adjustment in the first place).

To use Gymnastic Rings standalone, you need a pair of ceiling mounts like the ones by Gornation. Any type of mount or bracket that won’t damage the straps will do, however.
Our favorite is the Gorletic Gymnastic Rings. Gorletic makes the best wooden Calisthenics equipment, and we also love their quality and easy-to-read straps.

Conclusions About the Best Home Pull-Up Bars
You get plenty of solid options for a home Pull-Up Bar. Figuring out the right fit for your situation comes down to where you want to use your Pull-Up Bar at home.
Saving space & money
If you are strapped for space or money (or both), I recommend getting a telescopic Pull-Up Bar, and either the Gornation Extend-It Door Pull-Up Bar or the Pullup & Dip Doorway Pull-Up Bar are great choices as a starter home Pull-Up Bar.
If your doorframe isn’t that solid, the Gornation Hook-It is a good alternative here. It also provides a wider top bar while sacrificing only a slight loss of compactness. If saving space is your top concern, consider the Pullup & Dip Wall-Mounted Door Pull-Up Bar.
Focusing on your Pull-Ups
If you want to focus entirely on Pull-Ups and you need as much space around you below the bar, a Ceiling-Mounted Pull-Up Bar is the best fit for you. There are many options, but the best one is the simple and durable Gornation Pull-Up Bar “Multi”. Buy it once and use it for a lifetime.
Muscle-Ups & Stability
When you need that same stability a permanently fixed design gives, but you want more room above the bar, then you’re best off with a Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar. If possible, place this bar outside or in a room with a very high ceiling, allowing you to perform your Muscle-Ups and Dips. The best Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar for home use is the Pullup & Dip Muscle-Up Bar.
Full-Size Bar without Drilling
If you want a full-sized home Pull-Up Bar but don’t want to, can’t, or are not allowed to drill into your home, consider a Free-Standing Pull-Up Bar. The best Free-Standing home Pull-Up Bar is the Gravity Fitness Pull-Up Rack. It offers all the standard exercise options while being the most affordable on our list, and you also get some variety. The best alternative, albeit at a significantly higher price, is the Gornation Pull-Up Station, which is not only an excellent home Pull-Up Bar but also doubles as a Street Lifting station.

If your ceiling is concrete, it can support a Ceiling Pull-Up Bar. If you have a wooden ceiling, it depends on the stud placement and whether the mounting points of the Pull-Up Bar fall in the center of two studs. If they do, studs can easily carry a Ceiling Pull-Up Bar and your body weight.
