Who are CaliMove – Calisthenics Movement?

Sven Kohl and Alex “El Eggs” Lorenz are the duo behind CaliMove, or officially Calisthenics Movement. They set up CaliMove to make Calisthenics accessible to as many people as possible. They have a hugely popular YouTube channel (@calimove) and frequently host in-person live events that are comparatively cheap to attend. These live events, often in Leipzig, Germany, attract attendees from all over the world. 

So, who are Sven Kohl and Alex Lorenz?

Sven Kohl is a state-certified physical therapist and fitness trainer with over 10 years of experience and has trained in Calisthenics since 2012. 

Alex Lorenz, also known as “El Eggs” or “The Man in the Blue Shorts,” is a sports teacher who focuses on nutritional science. He has trained in Calisthenics since 2012 and founded the Calisthenics and Parkour Association in Leipzig, Germany. In addition to Calisthenics, Alex is very experienced in Taekwondo, Parkour, Biketrial, and Tricking, giving him a total of 27 years of experience.

CaliMove Complete Calisthenics Program Overview

CaliMove’s Complete Calisthenics Program takes you from being a complete novice to a Calisthenics master. It suits everyone who wants to get fit, get stronger, gain muscle mass and master new skills. The first level has no baseline requirements, and everyone (who is healthy) can start right away. The complete program consists of 5 levels, each getting progressively more demanding as you grow.

Exercises Progression

The Complete Calisthenics Program features a highly diverse range of exercises. The levels range from very easy Calisthenics moves for the beginner to some of the most challenging exercises later. 

The starting levels consist of exercises like rows, incline push-ups, band-assisted exercises and core strengthening exercises. Near the end of the program, you’ll see very advanced exercises like front-lever pull-ups, handstands, pistol squats, planche exercises, one-arm exercises and more. 

Course Levels

The Complete Calisthenics Program consists of five courses called “levels”: beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, and master. Each level takes 19 weeks to complete, so the complete program lasts very long. At the least, CaliMove’s Complete Calisthenics Program will take you two years to complete the 95-week total. More realistically, it will take you three years to account for when life gets in the way of a perfect training schedule.

CaliMove did an excellent job creating such an extensive program, spanning multiple years, while keeping realistic goals and progression in mind. They focused on science-backed expectations, not empty promises of absurdly fast gains.

Phases and Level Schedules

Each level is divided into four phases, each consisting of a Test Week and three or four Training Weeks. Test Weeks establish your benchmarks, which you need to note somewhere.

CaliMove requires you to keep your own schedule and determine which exercises you must do on which days.  To do this, you refer to the provided Lecture Overview.

You can find the corresponding “lecture” (e.g., workout) you need to do that day by looking at which week and day you are in. You can also download each overview and schedule in PDF format. 

Individual Lectures and Frames

Each lecture is accompanied by a GIF animation called a “Frame”. The Frame will tell you the exercise to perform, the number of repetitions you should strive for, and how long you should do that exercise. Aside from the Frames, each exercise can be viewed in that Phase’s Exercise List, where they are displayed with high-quality videos and excellent narration by El Eggs.

There is a lot of information to digest, but the structure of the Complete Calisthenics Program makes sense. The general information videos (at the beginning of a level) explain what you need to do and how the Frames work. After that, the Frames are concise and easy to follow. This method avoids having to regurgitate the same information time and again.

Typical Workouts

Each lecture (workout) starts with a warm-up. All levels of the Complete Calisthenics Program have a unique warm-up exercise set. You must keep up-to-date with the warm-up for that particular level to avoid injury and maximize your results.

Following the warm-up is a session of ten minutes to an hour of exercise. This includes rest and cool-down. The higher the level, the longer the lectures tend to be. CaliMove’s Complete Calisthenics Program is easy to adopt into any schedule, and as you get into the groove of exercising more, the time requirement only modestly increases.

Now that I’ve gone through the Complete Calisthenics Program by Calisthenics Movement, what conclusions can I draw? I’ll split my conclusion into four areas to better explain my thoughts.

1. Effectiveness of the Exercises

The exercises in the CaliMove Complete Calisthenics program are effective and suitable for each level. Exercises in Level 1 focus on gross motor skills and building core strength. They expect no athletic finesse from you, only basic movements that strain the largest muscles in your body, arms and legs. 

Progressively harder levels come with equally harder exercises. Here are some examples (but not an exhaustive list by a long shot) of what’s in store for you:

3. Level Requirements

The baseline requirements from you are none at all. That is to say, to start the Level 1 “Beginner Program”. Since each course is individually purchasable, it makes sense to step in at a higher level should you already be a more advanced Calisthenics practitioner. You can refer to the following chart, which depicts the prerequisite capabilities needed to start at that level.

4. Progression

The incremental level of difficulty is solid. When you’re done with the current level, your body is ready to start the next level. For most, it won’t be a constant uphill battle, but there will be this slope you’re constantly walking up to. It should fit most people’s schedules and physical capabilities.

CaliMove only allows a sneak peek one week in advance to ensure you’re not overwhelmed. The weeks beyond that remain locked until then. This will also limit the number of pages you can access, keeping you from getting lost and making it easier to see which week you’re currently at.

Higher levels come with progressively harder exercises. This is a long program with realistic expectations. You are looking at a two to three-year investment that will see you go from being an absolute beginner to a master in Calisthenics.

Who Is El Eggs?

Alex “El Eggs” Lorenz is a popular Calisthenics YouTuber from Germany who adopted his nickname because of the hair on his head. He has a degree in physical education and nutrition. In 2012 he founded a Calisthenics and Parkour oriented sports club in Leipzig, Germany. Aside from his professional career in sports and Calisthenics, he is also a Taekwondo enthusiast among others. How long are Cali Move workouts?

This depends on the level you’re at. Lower levels might be as short as 10 minutes, while higher levels can go up to 45 minutes. This is with rests, warm-up and stretching included.

How long does the Cali Move Complete Calisthenics program take?

Each Level is 19 weeks long, there are 5 Levels so it will take a total of 95 weeks to complete the program in full. This is without taking any vacation (or at least not skipping your exercise days during vacation) or sick days. A more realistic estimation would be 3 years.

      Hi Antonio! Great question. We have good contact with the owners and as we speak they are creating a calisthenics app. As you can understand it’s a lot of work, since they sell a lot of calisthenics programs and have a lot of content. Alex Lorenz told me that the app will be finished early 2025 and that it is depending on how fast they proceed with developing with the app. So, right now you are forced to use the web page open until they release their app. Hope this helps and good luck with your training!
