DIE RINGE is a German Calisthenics company that specializes in Gymnastic Rings exercise. They’ve been around since 2017 and have launched a new Calisthenics app, also called Die Ringe. Die Ringe is German for, you guessed it, “The Rings” and promises to be a beginner-to-professional full-spectrum Calisthenics app for mastering various skills. I’ll take you through a complete walkthrough of the Die Ringe app, from initial sign-up to my personal gains after a few weeks. Along the way, I’ll share my thoughts and findings about every little detail of the app and the free set of Gymnastic Rings that comes with it.

DIE RINGE Gymnastic Rings

The Die Ringe Gymnastic Rings are certainly on par with the Gymnastic Rings by Gornation and Gorletic. They feel like solid rings with a nice texture. You can get them in either the 28mm Olympic standard or, my favorite, the 32mm CrossFit Standard (which they call Premium). With the premium version, you also get a door anchor and a pair of foot straps, which are used in some of the app’s lower-body exercises.

The rings alone cost 50 euros; however, you get them for free with a yearly subscription. That’s a no-brainer deal for me.

The Website Dashboard & App Download

The dashboard is minimalist, featuring only your billing and transaction history, along with a download button to the app. In my case, the link directed me to the Apple Store, even though I have an Android device. When I tried logging in to the website using my phone, the download button was no longer available. 

If you scroll down to the bottom of the website, you can also download it from Google Play or the Apple Store. In the app, you log in using the same method you used to register on the website: your email, Google, or Facebook login.

In my opinion, the website dashboard needs a little more work to operate seamlessly across different operating systems. 

First Time Training Setup

The initial setup allows you to select up to 4 skills you’d like to learn and requests a brief assessment of your current skill level. You are also asked to rank order growth, mobility and skill in how important they are to you. For my skills, I chose the Front Lever and Back Lever to provide a beginner’s perspective and gauge the progression.

You can always change all these settings. Later, I will make a few changes to the training routine and add the Ring Muscle-Up.

You also set the training days and rest days that suit you. With all this information, the “coach” sets up an initial training plan that will be refined after a few exercises.

Front Pages Overview

The front pages have a clear and intuitive layout. You always start in the Coach page. At the top, next to your name, you can change some generic app preferences, view your account details, and send feedback back to the developers.

At the bottom, you browse to other pages: Discover and Profile. I’ll go through each of the three pages separately.

Coach Page

The Coach Page is where you start your workouts and keep track of the upcoming exercises. The tab provides an overview of the upcoming training days and exercises. You can view your training and rest days for the current week, and get a sneak peek at the skill exercises scheduled for that week. The exercises for the very next workout day are also listed at the top. You start the next exercise by tapping “Go!” on one of the exercises. 

I chose Front Levers and Skin-the-Cat as my skills to learn, and they are included in my first training day. 

There is a timer within which you need to start your next exercise. You should generally follow the schedule of workout days and rest days, but you can start your next exercise at any time. 

Discover Page

The Discover Page adds immense depth to the app. You can view all 750+ exercises and their various types here with the built-in search function. You can also preview the different training styles, select a focus workout routine for specific muscle groups and even set up your own custom workout schedule. 

Setting up your custom workout routine is easy, but it does require some more advanced knowledge of effective exercise combinations, progression and what you are capable of.  I recommend this feature only for advanced practitioners who have already made some progress with the Die Ringe app.

Profile Page

The Profile page provides an overview of your current statistics, including your training streak, total workouts, and total time spent working out. You can also view a complete workout history by clicking “View More”. 

Die Ringe Training Program Walkthrough

To start a workout, tap the “Go!” button, which immediately brings you to the workout environment. All exercises, including the warm-up and cooldown, feature short animations that you can play and replay. I’ll go through the initial skill test, a typical workout and a typical workout day with you. In this case, my workout day consisted of the skills Front Levers and Skin-the-Cat, as well as a general lower-body strength workout.

Initial Skill Test

The first time you do a skill progression exercise, you are tested for your initial skill for that exercise. This includes how well you can do near-complete exercises and exercises that build up the strength and mobility needed.

In this case, the Die Ringe app assessed my proficiency for the Front Lever with a Half Leg Front Lever Pull and Tucked Front Levers. After the assessment, the coach presented me with the first full workout. I could choose to do this later, if I felt tired, or continue with it at once.

The Typical Workout

Each workout consists of a warm-up, a short series of exercises, and a cool-down. Exercises are performed for a specific duration, typically for static or continuous movements, or for a target number of repetitions to match or exceed.

In this case, the very first workout, I had to do Tuck Front Levers, regular Front Levers and other variations for relatively short durations. You are asked to rate your performance after each exercise by selecting how many repetitions you managed for how long you held on. The coach takes this feedback into account for the next workout. So, if you couldn’t finish the exercise, the coach will adjust the progression for the next workout(s). 

After the workout, you are presented with your final score and shown the next step in your journey to master that skill. My workouts took no longer than 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

The third exercise day was Ringtraining. After a brief warm-up, I performed a few strength-building exercises and a skill: Skin the Cat (German Hang). All good stuff to master the rings.

The Typical Workout Day

You can space the exercises for that day throughout the day, for instance, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening. You can also do them back-to-back. The app sends you reminders on workout days. I haven’t had any problems keeping up since the app effectively spaces out the targeted muscle groups.

The Typical Workout Week

You can set and adjust the frequency of your workout days in the app. In my case, I put a minimum 1-day rest period between each exercise day to mimic what a Calisthenics beginner would do. The app created a well-structured week-by-week training plan tailored to the desired intensity.

Viewing Your Progress

You can view your progress from the Profile page. The Die Ringe app uses a gamified Experience (“XP”) system to keep track of your progress. The earned XP is added up, and you can view which exercise moments have added to your XP. 

From the Discover page, where you can see every workout style and skill, the total XP you earned in that category is also shown.

Adjusting Your Goals & Skills

You can adjust your goals and the skills you want to learn at any point. You can do this by going to Settings and then “Adjust Coach”.

This means that, if you find the current workout not to your liking or it is too hard (or too easy!), you can always make these baseline adjustments. The Die Ringe app will continue from there, redesigning your workout and potentially incorporating assessment exercises for newly acquired skills. 

This is a very nice feature. It didn’t need resetting my profile or any previously acquired XP. In my case, I removed Skin-the-Cat since I already mastered that skill, added the Ring Muscle-Up, and added Wednesday as an exercise day. The app picked up seamlessly, and now there is a Ring Muscle-Up exercise for next Wednesday.

Extra Training

Die Ringe currently has 21 specialized programs called “Extra Training”. These programs target specific muscle groups, such as developing big shoulders, biceps, and a stronger core, among other areas. These workouts are typically shorter than those in the Coach’s main program. You can feasibly add them to your existing routine, or one of your rest days. Make sure you adjust the intensity of your routine (for instance, by removing a workout day) so you don’t overtrain your Calisthenics.

Making A Custom Workout Program

As I mentioned briefly, you can create a custom workout within the Die Ringe App. This is an advanced feature that requires extensive tweaking and knowledge of effective exercise routines. The process of constructing a workout program is straightforward, but it can be time-consuming if you want to create a comprehensive program from scratch. 

Still, it is a nice feature for the expert Calisthenics athlete who’s already familiar with the Die Ringe app. I can use the exercises from my coach’s workout and add exercises from a specialized program to make my custom workout program.

Frequent Future Updates

De Ringe will bring out updates regularly. During our interview with the owner of Die Ringe, Paul, he said that they’re planning a major update shortly after the publication of this article. We will update this article when that update happens. The Die Ringe app is already very good, and I’m looking forward to any improvements and, most of all, additions.

The Die Ringe app has a paid and a free version. The free version is quite good with access to over 500 exercises and a free bodyweight program to follow. The paid version adds many more features and a much more tailored experience.

I highly recommend the yearly subscription model. It’s great value for money and you get the Gymnastic Rings, worth 50 euros, for free. Free versus Paid Version

As I said, the free version is pretty good, and you get one of the best Calisthenics apps. However, the options are limited. The free version offers a beginner-friendly bodyweight exercise plan, making it a great entry point. That’s about it, and it does feel a bit like a teaser to the main course, the paid version. That being said, the program is excellent, and beginners can achieve great results. 

The paid version adds 250+ exercises as well as more professionally made workout styles and specialized programs. The main attraction of the paid version is, of course, the “Coach”. This assesses your current skill level, desired workout style and desired Calisthenics skills to create a custom-tailored workout program. It also re-evaluates your current level and progression with every exercise you do.

If you want to get into Calisthenics with Gymnastic Rings and considering you can get a set of quality Gymnastic Rings for free with Die Ringe, the paid version is the obvious choice. It is also a great general Calisthenics apps if you want to learn new skills or need a beginner-friendly program with advanced features later on.

Conclusions About the Die Ringe Calisthenics App

I am a huge fan of Gymnastic Rings in Calisthenics, so I was very excited to try out the Die Ring app. Of course, my love for the rings makes me a bit biased towards an app like this, but it also gives me certain expectations. So far, the Die Ringe app certainly has met my expectations for a good, easy-to-use and beginner-friendly Calisthenics app that makes mastering the Gymnastic Rings accessible. But the Die Ringe app is so much more than just about Gymnastic Rings. It already features a fully fledged bodyweight exercise program along with many other skills you can learn. Future updates promise us even more training diversity.

When I changed my goals and skills to include a far more advanced exercise, the Ring Muscle-Up, the Die Ringe app adjusted seamlessly. I achieved some great results using the app in that way, and it also makes a good program for more advanced users. I’m hoping for more good things where this came from, like more specialized programs and workout styles. Die Ringe lets us know they are working on major, future updates.
