Changes Between the Programs and the Cali Move App
The Calisthenics Programs in the app used to be web-based. If you had lifetime access to the Complete Calisthenics or Body Transformation (now Aesthetic Calisthenics) courses, you can still access those through their web versions.
Cali Move made significant updates to all their programs for the app. These updates include over 400 new video takes, updated descriptions and a full audit of the exercise curriculum, using the latest scientific data available. Skills are acquired earlier and used to build strength, muscle and endurance. This means slightly slower gains in the beginning, but data has shown this method is vastly more efficient in getting gains over the mid to long term.
First Time Setup
When you start the app for the first time, you’ll be presented with a personalized setup. You’re asked to fill in your sex, age and height. After that, you can arrange your goals by priority, and you are asked to estimate your performance for a couple of exercises.
Don’t worry too much about your goals or getting your current performance right. The app will continually assess your performance and adjust its progression.
When you’re done, tap Setup Account and log in to the Cali Move App using the same email address.
In my case, I got the Complete Calisthenics and the Supreme Mobility programs based on my priorities. These are two highly recommended Calisthenics Programs that I like in their program format, too.
Front Pages Overview
The front page has a modern feel with swift navigation. Sometimes the (updated) data takes a few seconds to load and display between swipes and startup. You can navigate between 4 pages, all of which I’ll walk you through now.
The Feed Page
The main page is the feed page. You can see the very next workout for your programs at the top, followed by the achievement you are working toward. Tapping on the workout(s) brings you to the exercise environment where you can start the workout.
You can also read some interesting blog articles (opens a browser) or visit a selection of Calisthenics equipment products made by Gornation. The articles are interesting reads, mainly about effective exercises and Alex and Sven’s personal experiences.

We generally also like Gornation products for our Calisthenics and can recommend using them for your Cali Move app as well. Here are a few of our reviews for commonly used Gornation products with Cali Move:
The Plan Page
You can see your upcoming workout days from the Plan page. The first page is this week’s schedule, and you can look ahead at least 4 weeks and see what’s in store. You can click on any workout, reschedule it (not recommended), and read the preview page for that workout.
The Trophies Page
On the Trophies page, you can view your achievements. This is the only “quantified” way to view your progress. The Cali Move app doesn’t provide metrics like percentages gained or progress. Instead, you can earn these achievements simply by using the app and doing workouts. Nebulous percentages like how far you’ve progressed through a program say very little factually about your gains, anyway.
The Profile Page
On this page, you can view and change or cancel your programs and subscriptions. You can also modify some basic settings about yourself and the app, such as notification preferences.
Typical Workout
The typical workout consists of a 2 to 5-minute warm-up followed by the main workout. Most workouts take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete, including resting periods. Each exercise in a workout consists of 3 stages: the explanation stage, the exercise itself and then the rating stage. The explanation and rating phases are both contained in the resting time.
Explanation Phase during the Resting Time
During the explanation, you are given the name of the exercise and an animation of the movement. You are also given your target repetitions and your RiR (Reps in Reserve) or SiR (Seconds in Reserve).
The RiR is a feedback system that allows the app to adjust the progression. In essence, RiR means you stop the exercise whenever you feel you can only do that many more repetitions to failure. I’ll go deeper into the RiR system below.
You can click on the exclamation mark next to the exercise name to watch an instruction video or read a description. The instruction videos in these tutorials are kept short enough to watch during the resting phases between exercises. The resting timer keeps ticking in the background, and the workout will close the tutorial 5 seconds before the next exercise begins.
The Exercise Phase
The Cali Move app works with strict sets, antagonistic sets, cluster sets and rest-pause sets. The exercises we encountered in the beginning were mostly strict sets, meaning you are never to exceed the number of repetitions or seconds given, while also keeping your RiR in mind. All you have to do is follow the schedule, exercise by exercise, while doing your best to hit those repetitions.
An HD video loop accompanies the exercise itself. You can adjust the video angle view. With some exercises, an up and down arrow symbol indicates the speed at which you should do the exercise. This provides clear and understandable instructions that you can simply follow along with.
The whole workout runs on timers. You can skip exercise timers (and resting phases), but it’s best to let the timer run and do your best to keep up with the animation or hold on until the timer runs out, while keeping your RiR/SiR in mind.
The Rating Phase
After each exercise, you are asked to rate your performance by indicating how many repetitions you could feel you could still do (remember, never exercise to failure or do more repetitions than asked for). You must try to be as accurate as you can. The Cali Move App uses this information to adjust the progression.
You also get a summary of your exercises and how you performed after the workout.
Cali Move Reps in Reserve (RiR or SiR) Tutorial
The Cali Move App often does not have you exercise to failure. Instead, you exercise up to a number of repetitions before failure. This number before failure is your RiR. This is how many more repetitions you feel like you could still do before failure. An RiR of 2 means you could potentially do two more repetitions.
Every exercise comes with a target number of repetitions and an RiR. You should always stop the exercise once you feel you can only do the RiR number left in you. This means there can only be three situations:
- You completed the set with at least the RiR number or more left in you.
- You managed the set with exactly the RiR number left in you.
- You failed the set because you only had the RiR number left in you before completing the set.
This also means that you should stop the exercise, even if you could complete the set, but it would mean going over the RiR. In a nutshell, you are never giving it your all to complete that one set.
For instance, if you had a target set of 12 with an RiR of 2, you need to be able to do 14 repetitions (12 + 2) to complete the set of 12 successfully. You should not complete the set no matter what. Again, this could lead to only three situations:
- You completed 12 repetitions while feeling you could do 2 or more repetitions.
- You managed all 12 repetitions with exactly 2 repetitions left in you.
- You failed the set because you had to stop when you felt you could only do two more and weren’t at twelve, or because you would have to tap into your final two repetitions to reach twelve (which isn’t allowed).
SiR (Seconds in Reserve) works the same way, but for how many seconds you should leave in the tank. There are also RiR0 exercises, meaning 0 repetitions in reserve, so you would exercise to failure.
Typical Workout Days
The typical workout day either has one workout from your Calisthenics program, one workout from your Mobility program or a workout for both. Since you cannot combine two or more Calisthenics programs, the maximum number of workouts is always two.
Depending on your progression and whether you have one or two programs, you’ll be working out anywhere between 15 minutes and over an hour on a workout day.
Typical Workout Week
You can set and adjust the number of workout days in the Cali Move app. The app tries to space out your workout days evenly through the week with as much rest in between. For instance, with just two workout days, it will give you 3 days and 2 days rest respectively after a workout day.
Programs Progression and The Science
Sven and Alex firmly believe in a science-backed approach to Calisthenics and sports. They are trained and educated in relevant fields and use this expertise to create and refine their programs. From personally speaking with Alex El Eggs, we learned that the Cali Move app works to strike a balance between hypertrophy and recovery time.
From the available data, most people sit in between 7 and 14 repetitions to achieve hypertrophy, between 3 and 6 for strength and 15 or more for endurance. These figures are based on formulae that take the 1RM (One Repetition Maximum) as a base. From research and their own experience, they know that hypertrophy is possible in all repetition ranges; however, practically, the vast majority of people fall squarely in these brackets without much deviation.
Depending on your selected programs and initial assessment, the Cali Move app sets up an initial progression based on these scientific findings. Using the RiR feedback mechanic, the app continually refines this progression curve to come to a nearly perfect match with your 1RM-based hypertrophy ranges.
The progression is set by exercise categories, combining variations of the same base exercise into a bracket. For example, the base exercise, Push-Ups, has Incline push-ups, archer push-ups and one-arm push-ups. Depending on how many you can do for each, different exercises might hit different muscle activations. For instance:
- 20 incline push-ups for endurance
- 12 push-ups for hypertrophy
- 5 archer push-ups for strength
The Cali Move App combines these exercise brackets with repetition ranges for each to come to a balanced workout between hypertrophy, strength and endurance.
Picking and Changing Your Programs and Workout Schedule
The initial assessment already recommends the best Calisthenics program for your priorities. You can always start the Supreme Mobility program as well. You can change or cancel your programs at any time through the app. Here is an overview of the available programs included in the Cali Move app, with links to in-depth reviews we did for them:
| Calisthenics (pick one) | Mobility |
|---|---|
| Complete Calisthenics This is Cali Move’s signature general Calisthenics program and the best fit for 90% of people. This is a beginner-to-expert program. | Supreme Mobility Mobility Program and stretching app that builds agility and functional strength simultaneously. You can always follow this program together with any of the Calisthenics programs. |
| Aestethic Calisthenics Formerly known as Body Transformation, more intense than Complete Calisthenics with a focus on Hypertrophy. | |
| Calisthenics Zero This is a general Calisthenics program for those who have no Calisthenics equipment available. | |
| Quick Calisthenics This is a general Calisthenics program for those who have very little time available or have a variable schedule. |
You can pick whichever program you like, but the Cali Move App limits you to one Calisthenics program active at any one time. You can always follow the Supreme Mobility program on its own or in combination with a Calisthenics program.
Pricing For the Cali Move App
The Cali Move app itself is free, but you need to subscribe to at least one of the programs. All the programs cost the same, 19,99 a month, and you get a 50% discount on any second program you have.
| Subscription | Monthly | Bi-Annual | Annual |
| 1 Program | €19.99 | €89.99 | €119.99 |
| 2 Programs | €29.99 | €134.99 | €179.99 |
- 33% Discount On All Programs
- Discount Until 01-12-2025 23:59 hrs.
That puts the Cali Move app in the highest price bracket for Calisthenics Apps. However, you get an easy-to-use app with very high production cost and quality videos, descriptions, and workouts. It is the best general Calisthenics App on the market, and that justifies paying a little extra to get those gains.
Conclusions for the Cali Move App
We love the Cali Move app for its simplicity and science-based approach to Calisthenics. Many other apps try to appear scientific by listing a bunch of meaningless statistics and percentages. Not the Cali Move App. The internal workings of this app are sound, and using the RiR method is a beginner-friendly way to do the actual math behind Calisthenics (without bothering you with the formulas).
Cali Move proves again why they’re the right pick for 90% of people. Their programs are easy to follow and put you on an efficient beginner-to-expert Calisthenics path. No bells and whistles, no pretends or promises, just pure Calisthenics that comes from the heart and the mind.
The Cali Move App itself runs smoothly and keeps things focused on where it matters. The production value that went into shaping this app, with hundreds of crisp, HD videos and tutorials, is noticeably there.
Most importantly, you get results. The training programs are effective and already provide a good indication from just the initial assessment. After a workout or two, the progression curve is ideal for achieving efficient gains with sufficient recovery time. You can always switch between workout styles, and the app picks up seamlessly.
As a final verdict, despite being slightly higher priced than other apps, I highly recommend using the Cali Move app for your Calisthenics.

Hi Jelle thanks for the great review! I love the Calimove programs and content, and highly recommend their stuff to anyone i know interested in training in calisthenics or at home. I already own a number of the Calimove programs such as Complete Calisthenics (all levels), Home Workout, and Mobility 1.0 and 2.0, so i’m a long time loyal customer and already made significant financial investment in purchasing a lot of the programs over the years. For existing customers, will they have to purchase the same programs all over again to use them in the app? Put another way, will existing customers be able to access the programs in the app they’ve already previously bought before the app existed, or at least get any discounts?
I already have the web-based version of Complete Calisthenics (the 5 levels). How much does that version differ from the one in the app and do you feel it is worth to pay for the upgrade?
Granted, these guys truly deserve all the financial help, their content is amazing and the app looks really sick.
